You Do Your Thing, And Let Me Do Mine
A great sadness. Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress, has passed away at the age of 80.

She was the first person I ever voted for, during the 1972 presidential election. They had just lowered the voting age, and it was an exciting time. McGovern was letting himself be scuttled by a pack of thieves, murderers and war criminals who somehow, with the collusion of the Dems themselves and the doofus American public, came to believe he was a worse choice than Richard Nixon. (Some things never change.)
Shirley was a breath of fresh air, and voting for her was more a blow for hope than anything else. Unfortunately it was also a blow on behalf of Nixon, and it set me off on my career-long losing streak of voting for 3rd-party candidates clear up until last year, when I finally voted with the Dems, and really thought I was backing a winner.
Screw it. Shirley was a great woman, and more of a man than any of the damnfools that have sat in the office in the past 30 years.
Wish Barbara Jordan could have made it, too.
